Aspectos sócio-dentais e de representação social da cárie dentária no contexto materno-infantil / Social-dental and social representation aspects of dental caries in the mother-child context

Resumo

Objetivos: Investigar características sociais e dentárias maternas relacionadas à experiência da doença cárie no filho e averiguar a representação social de mães a respeito do processo saúde-doença bucal. Métodos: A amostra constituiu-se de 272 pares de mães e filhos frequentadores de instituições públicas da educação infantil da cidade de Ponta Grossa, Paraná. As informações de interesse foram coletadas por meio de um questionário estruturado, de exame clínico bucal e de entrevista semiestruturada. O teste adotado para a análise estatística foi o de qui-quadrado para independência. Resultados: Os resultados comprovaram a associação entre necessidade de tratamento odontológico das mães e experiência de cárie nos filhos, assim como a sua relação com variáveis sócio-econômicas. Escolaridade, renda, número de filhos e frequência de visitas ao cirurgião-dentista foram as variáveis que apontaram significância estatística. Conclusão: A inserção social materna desfavorável, o número de filhos que a mãe possui, sua necessidade de tratamento odontológico e sua frequência de visitas ao cirurgião-dentista estiveram associadas à experiência da cárie dentária infantil. Ainda, conclui-se que as representações sociais maternas constituíram um importante instrumento de informação em saúde, devendo ser consideradas no processo de formulação de políticas públicas.

Abstract

Objectives: To investigate social and dental maternal characteristics related to the child’s caries experience and to verify the social representation of mothers with regard to the oral health-illness process. Methods: The sample consisted of 272 pairs of mothers and children who attending public institutions of early childhood education in Ponta Grossa city. The information of interest was collected through a structured, oral clinical examination and semi-structured interview. The test used for statistical analysis was a chi-square for independence. Results: The results confirmed the association between the mothers’ need for treatment and the children’s dental caries experience as well as their relationship with socio-economic variables. Education, income, number of children and frequency of visits to the dentist were the variables that showed statistical significance. Conclusion: Unfavorable maternal social inclusion, the number of children the mother has, their need for dental treatment and their frequency of visits to the dentist were associated with the children’s dental caries experience. Moreover, it appears that the mother’s social representations was an important tool for health information, and should be considered in the formulation of public policies.
